Pub Quiz and games evening - 24th May Mark Saturday 24th May in your diary as this will be our next club social event coinciding with the Dart 16 open that weekend. The evening is open to all members and their guests and we hope that all the visitors to the club will join in as well, starting about 7:30pm. Questions will be a very mixed bag from the intellectual through popular knowledge to the downright silly so you need not be a genius to suceed. Probably an advantage not to be a genius in fact. We also plan to play some lively games between question rounds so the eveining will definitely not be a serious one. The galley will be offering a pre-bookable evening meal for the convenience of the club visitors but any members/guests are welcome to prebook the meal as well as sailors in the open. You need to start putting you teams together now - teams can have up to 8 people in them. There is no entrance fee but there will be some modest prizes for all winners on the night. Hope you can make it. |

Mike Holdstock memorial race - Sunday 5th May The Mike Holdstock memorial race is to be run this Sunday (5th May) at noon. The weather is forecast as sunny spell with a high of 21C and gentle 8mph SE winds, so lets have a good show to remember a real old club character. Mike waw a stalwart of the club for many years and latterly used to run the race box with Carol and Albert every Sunday as well as doing odd maintenance and repair jobs around the club during the week. I first met Mike at Harry Heath's evening welding classes at Northbrook college where he took me under his wing, standing up to Harry's claim that "welding is a bloke's game only". He also used to encourage many of the youngsters in the club, particulrly when they had had a bit of a bad day on the water and he would always help them to get their confidence back and make them feel better. Mike was a friend of mine and I miss him. |

Time to get on your bike The sun is shining outside and the air is positively spring like so I am beginning to think about brushing the cobwebs off the bike ans heading up onto the downs. There are some positive reasons for mountain biking like it helps shed those excess pounds you might have gained over the winter, gets you fitter for sailing (builds up your legs for trapezing and hiking out), you get to see all sorts of wild life up on the hills and it is fun to do with a good bunch of people. We will be starting to cycle regularly on a Saturday morning and you are welcome to join us - just send your Email details/mobile number via the contact page and I will let you know where we are meeting etc. We are not going to try to beat the blokes so if you are new to mountain biking or haven't been for a while, we are probably at the right level for you. It is 2 years since Dave Parker's last charity off-road bike ride so I am thinking it should be a cyclathon year so we have all summer to get in shape for the 40 mile sponsored ride. |

Clarification on final lap for "finish on shape" races Just had an Email from Graham who was race officer 20th April regarding some confusion over the "finish on shape" races that we usually run with smaller mixed fleets. The clarification has been supplied by Martin Stevens who is current D16 National champion (for the umpteenth year in a row) and has many, many years experience both as a helm and a Race Officer. If a boat has past the penultimate buoy when the shape is raised (and 2 sound signals given) to signal the end of the race, but not yet past the finish mark, that boat only needs to pass the finish mark and does not require to complete a further lap to finish the race. After the shape has been raised, all boats will be finished when they cross the finish line (presuming they are not disqualified for any reason). This will affect the results from Sunday 20th April thus Shane and Jill were placed second in both races. It is often difficult to decide when to finish a race when you are race officer and trying to raise the shape at an appropriate time when there are no boats between the penultimate mark and the finish line can be impossible, so it is good to have this clarified for future races - thanks Graham and Martin for this. |
